On my first call back after being in the US, I delivered 2 babies - 1 via C-Section, the other with a vacuum. Each time I was in our Delivery area, each of the bays were full and the nurses were running from patient to patient, to care for them. More and more women are coming to have their babies at our hospital, which is great, but we needed some more space to help us do it better.
Just as I was leaving for the US in April, our Labor Ward Expansion Project was almost finished, so I was excited to see the completed work when I returned.
Our Nursery was expanded to about 4 times the size of what it used to be. It is one thing to see it on paper and another in person - it is massive. Sr. Sylvia said we have already had 21 babies in there - we sure are glad for the extra space.
Thanks to Rotary in Australia, we have added 20 new beds to our ward. Not necessarily for 20 additional patients at any time, but for our moms with their babies in the nursery to have a place to sleep while they are waiting for their babies to be able to go home. We have a new drug/supply closet to keep the supplies and medicines that our Labor Ward staff need handy. We have a counseling room to be able to talk to patients about things in private, we also have a nice private Triage room, for our nurses and patients to use, enabling us to have an extra delivery bed to use too. The nurses station also got bigger and gave them some more room for their check outs and meetings.
This expansion is definitely a huge blessing to our patients and staff and will help us to continue to care for the moms and their babies for many years to come.
